What IF, F1 (Ice Maker Fan) Means
IF (or F1, on some displays) means the ice maker fan has a detected problem, which LG says can sometimes occur from frost or ice buildup around the fan itself. LG gives the same manual-defrost procedure it uses for FF and rF.
Common Causes of IF, F1 (Ice Maker Fan)
- Frost or ice buildup around the ice maker fan
- Door not sealing fully, letting in humid air
- Ice maker fan motor itself has failed (if defrosting doesn't clear it)
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Move food to a cooler if you're concerned about spoilage, then unplug the unit and leave the doors open at least 8 hours to let any ice around the ice maker fan melt fully, checking the door gasket for tears or misalignment once things dry out, since a poor seal is a common root cause.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If leveling the unit and checking the door gasket doesn't resolve a repeat IF/F1 after a full defrost, the fan motor needs replacement, and that sits inside the freezer's ice maker assembly - not a simple swap.
- This is a different F1 than the numeric F-code scheme LG uses on ranges and cooktops - don't apply a range F1 troubleshooting guide to a refrigerator showing this code, and vice versa.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
