What OE, E03, E21 Means
OE means the washer can't drain the water from the wash cycle, per LG's front-load and top-load Help Library articles alike (top-load models sometimes display it after a frozen or clogged outlet hose). The most common causes are a kinked drain hose or a clogged drain-pump filter.
Common Causes of OE, E03, E21
- Drain hose kinked or crushed behind the washer
- Drain-pump filter clogged with lint, coins, or debris
- Excess suds creating air pockets the drain pump can't clear
- Drain hose frozen (cold-weather installations) or positioned too high
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Check behind the washer first for a kinked or crushed drain hose and straighten it, then run a spin-only cycle to test the drain pump - a humming sound in the first 15 seconds means the pump motor is working and the clog is more likely in the filter, which most LG front-load models let you access and clean from a small door at the bottom-front of the machine once the machine is unplugged and any drained water is caught in a shallow pan.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Unplug the washer and let any pressure in the drain system settle before opening the pump filter access door, since it can still hold hot, soapy water under some pressure right after a cycle.
- If clearing the filter and straightening the hose don't resolve OE, a jammed or failed drain pump motor needs replacement, and that's inside the cabinet base - not a simple filter clean.
- Running a tub-clean cycle and reducing detergent, as LG suggests, is worth trying before assuming a mechanical fault if the pump hums normally during the test.
