LG appliances use the same two-character display for two very different kinds of message. Some are fault codes: the machine has measured something wrong and stopped. Others are status notices: the machine is doing exactly what it was told, and the letters explain why it is not responding the way you expect. The second group generates a steady stream of service calls that end with a technician pressing one button. Before you book anything, check whether what you are looking at is on this list.
CL: the Controls Are Locked
CL appears on LG washers, dryers, dishwashers, the Styler steam closet and LG dehumidifiers, and in every case it means the child lock or control lock is active. The buttons ignore you because they were told to. On most machines the lock is toggled by holding one button, or a marked pair of buttons, for about three seconds; the buttons carry a small padlock symbol and the owner's manual for your model names them. Power-cycling does not always release it, because the lock is stored deliberately.
tCL: Run a Tub Clean
On LG washers, tCL is a reminder that a set number of wash cycles has passed since the last Tub Clean. Nothing has failed. The machine is asking you to run its maintenance cycle with an empty drum and a tub-cleaning product or the amount of bleach the manual specifies. Running that cycle resets the counter.
Cd: Cool Down
Cd shows at the end of a drying cycle on LG washer-dryer combos and on front-load washers with a drying function. The drum is tumbling without heat so that the load does not sit hot and creased. It ends on its own, and opening the door ends it early. Owners read Cd as a stuck cycle because the timer has already reached zero. It is finishing, not stuck.
Sb: Sabbath Mode on a Refrigerator
An LG refrigerator showing Sb is in Sabbath mode. The display, the interior lights, the alarms and the dispenser are suspended by design while the cooling carries on normally. It is entered by holding a button combination for several seconds, which is easy to do by accident while wiping the panel. The same combination, held again, exits it.
HS or H5: the Cooktop Is Hot
On LG ranges and cooktops, HS in a burner position means that surface is still above roughly 150°F and should not be touched. LG states plainly that this is an indicator and not an error code. Because the display uses seven-segment characters, some owners read it as H5 and go looking for a fault by that name. Let the surface cool and the letters disappear.
dn1, dn2 and dn3 on a Styler
The Styler steam closet has three slots for cycles downloaded through the LG ThinQ app. When one is selected the display shows dn1, dn2 or dn3, meaning downloaded cycle one, two or three. It is a cycle name, not a code.
FL on a Portable or Window Air Conditioner
FL, and on some models CH04, means the internal condensate tank has reached its level and needs emptying. On a humid day a portable unit pulls water out of the air quickly, so FL can return within hours of being cleared. That is the machine working, not failing. To empty it, unplug the unit before you tip it toward a shallow pan, because you are pouring water out of a cabinet that contains a compressor and a fan motor. If a continuous-drain hose is fitted, FL points at a kinked or uphill hose instead.
PF: the Power Went Out
PF on an LG washer or dryer records that power was interrupted during a cycle. Press Start to resume or choose a new cycle.
When One of These Deserves a Call
A status notice becomes worth a visit only when it will not clear or when another symptom rides along with it: CL that will not release with the correct buttons held, HS that stays lit on a cold cooktop, or FL on a unit standing in a puddle. In those cases book an LG appliance repair and say which message you saw and what you already tried.
