What d r n, OE Means
The drn (also shown as OE) code means the dryer stopped during operation because residual water inside the unit - or in models with a WashTower dryer half, the same drain-related fault - couldn't be pumped out properly, often because a water container is full, the drain hose is kinked, or the drain pump has air trapped in it. LG's main dryer article and its dedicated WashTower dryer article both describe the same freeze-related version of this fault in winter, when residual water in the drain path freezes and stops the pump from working.

- Removable water container full or not properly inserted
- Drain hose kinked, pressed, or installed too high
- Drain pump filled with air (needs the Air Dry cycle to clear residual water)
- Residual water in the drain path frozen in cold weather
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
First check whether your dryer has a removable water container and, if so, make sure it's empty and properly reinserted; then check that the drain hose (if your model uses one) isn't kinked, pinched, or installed too high above the floor. If it's cold weather and you suspect the drain hose has frozen, wrap the frozen section in a towel soaked in warm water for about 10 minutes to thaw it before running a cycle.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Never use a heat gun or any high-heat tool to thaw a frozen drain hose - LG's own thawing method uses a warm, wet towel and, for larger ice buildup, a built-in defrost mode, specifically to avoid burns or damaging the plastic components.
- If the water container is empty, the hose isn't kinked, and it isn't cold enough to be a freeze issue, but drn/OE still appears, the drain pump itself may have failed and needs a technician.
- On a WashTower, this is the dryer half's own drain-related fault - the washer half above it can keep working normally even while the dryer shows this code, so don't assume the whole unit needs service.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
