What IF (Lint Filter Not Detected) Means
IF means the dryer's sensor can't detect the lint filter correctly, per LG's dryer Help Library article, which notes the filter has two parts (an exterior and interior filter) that both need to be correctly assembled, and a small magnet inside the interior filter that the dryer uses to sense it's in place.
Common Causes of IF (Lint Filter Not Detected)
- Lint filter not fully or correctly assembled/inserted
- Magnet inside the interior filter has fallen out or is missing
- Lint filter or magnet holder damaged
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Remove the lint filter and check that both the exterior and interior pieces are correctly assembled together, then confirm the magnet in the interior filter is still in place before reinserting it fully.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If the magnet has genuinely fallen out or the holder is damaged, LG says to purchase a new lint filter rather than trying to reattach a lost magnet - a replacement filter is an inexpensive part compared to a service call.
- If the filter is correctly assembled, properly inserted, and the magnet is intact but IF still persists, that points to the sensor itself and needs a technician's inspection.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
