What FF Means
FF means the freezer fan motor isn't turning, most often because ice or frost buildup around it is physically blocking the blades. LG's dedicated Er FF/E FF/F article and its main error-code list both describe the same fault and the same fix.
Common Causes of FF
- Ice or frost buildup around the freezer fan blocking rotation
- Freezer overloaded with food restricting airflow
- Door not closing fully, letting in humid air that refreezes as frost
- Fan motor itself has failed (if ice buildup isn't the cause)
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Move food to a cooler or spare refrigerator first, then unplug the unit and leave the freezer and refrigerator doors fully open for at least 24 hours (LG notes this can take longer in winter) so the ice melts naturally, placing dry towels around the base to catch water as it melts.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Do not use a hair dryer or other heat source to speed up the melt - LG specifically warns this can warp plastic parts or create a fire hazard.
- If the FF code returns after a full defrost and dry-out with no frost visible, the fan motor itself has likely failed and needs a technician to replace it correctly.
- A blocked freezer fan means poor freezer performance the whole time it's ignored, which raises the risk of partial food thawing you won't notice until it's spoiled.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
